Charleston To End Departure Deal With Carnival In 2024

The South Carolina Ports Authority has decided to end its deal with Carnival Cruise Line in 2024, meaning CCL ships will no longer use Charleston, S.C. as a point of departure for a cruise.

The news was first reported by The Post and Courier of Charleston, via the Associated Press.

Carnival had used the port at Union Pier Terminal for cruise departures and arrivals after 2024, cruise ships can still dock there but only for a same-day port of call to the picturesque southern city.

And apparently, thats the way Charleston officials want it. The city was averaging about 70 cruises a year that left Union Pier Terminal for short trips to the Bahamas and other close Caribbean nations. But Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg said having fewer visitors taking cruises will improve the quality of life.

Were grateful to the port for taking this critically important step, and we look forward to continuing to work with to make Union Pier a beautiful and vibrant part of the city of Charleston, Tecklenburg said.

Carnival Cruise Line spokesman Matt Lupoli said the company will try to work with state and city officials to use Charleston as part of an itinerary.

In the meantime, it is business as usual, and we look forward to seeing our guests aboard Carnival Sunshine through 2024, Lupoli said.

Cruise Ships To No Longer Depart From Charleston After 2024

Cruise ships will no longer start their journeys from Charleston by the end of 2024, the South Carolina Ports Authority said.

The authority decided to not renew a deal with Carnival Cruise Line that allowed cruises to begin and end from the Union Pier Terminal in downtown Charleston.

Cruise ships can continue to dock at Charleston, but only for brief, same-day port of call stops, The Post and Courier of Charleston reported.

The decision should cut the number of cruise passengers in Charleston down by 80%, officials said.

The State Ports Authority said it will no longer work on plans to redevelop a warehouse at the Union Pier into a cruise terminal. Permits to start the project have been tied up for years by lawsuits from conservation and historical preservation groups.

Instead, the authority said it will look into selling the land it owns to a private developer.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg said the decision by the authority will improve the quality of life in his city.

Were grateful to the port for taking this critically important step, and we look forward to continuing to work with to make Union Pier a beautiful and vibrant part of the city of Charleston, Tecklenburg said.

Currently, about 70 cruises a year leave Charleston for the Bahamas and other Eastern Caribbean destinations.

Carnival Cruise Line officials said they will continue to work with the authority to find options to use Charleston.

South Carolina Ports Announces End Of Carnival Cruise Contract

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Carnival Cruises will no longer depart and return to Union Pier Terminal in Charleston starting in 2024.

On Wednesday, the SC Ports announced it will not be renewing the homeport cruising contract, and will instead focus on redevelopment of Union Pier. The ports do still plan to host ships as a port of call in the future.

Jim Newsome, president and CEO of South Carolina Ports Authority, says this has been a conversation for a while.

As time has gone along, and certainly the real estate values have increased in Charleston and just the opportunity to do something really transformational. The City of Charleston has led us to the conclusion to do a complete non-maritime redevelopment. And the consequence of that is we really dont have a place to do a home port operation after the end of this contract in 2024, Newsome says.

Newsome says they have engaged Low Enterprises, the firm building the Cooper Hotel on Concord Street, for the redevelopment.

So they are running point on the planning, and that planning really entails deciding what steps and taking the steps needed to get this property to whats known as a planned unit development phase, Newsome says.

He says the timeline goal is to move with the development as fast as possible once the 2024 contract with Carnival is up.

Basically where theres a master plan that can be approved, and then developers can then buy the property and do whats in their best interest on that property, Newsome says.

Carnival Sunshine Cruise Vlog – Charleston, SC Embarkation | February 2022

No word at this point as to where Carnival Sunshine might wind up after completing her Charleston run. It is also possible perhaps even likely that the South Carolina city might wind up welcoming a Carnival competitor down the line. As we look to the future, will continue to evaluate the market and forward to continued partnerships and opportunities.

Sunshine began sailing out of Charleston again in January following the industry-wide shutdown. Currently, the ship does a variety of sailings out of the port, from four-day jaunts to the Bahamas all the way up to 10-day Carnival Journeys sailings to either the Eastern or Southern Caribbean.

Trying To Park For Carnival Cruise

Signage to the port is minimal. Upon arrival it feels like we are going to run a test track with all the yellow cones. Like others have said there are check points after check points. No signs indicating what pieces of information you need to have ready. Just have your boarding passes, passports, photo identifications in hand as well as a debit/credit card because they don’t take cash for parking . It was nice to be able to park inside the warehouse. There are buses to transport you closer to the boat at no charge . Going through customs and obtaining room key was fairly quick, BE SURE to have your health forms completed and in hand before you are next in line. Makes the process nearly seamless. Upon returning to Charleston, we opted to carry our luggage off the boat. Allowed us to disembark about 7:30. transport buses waited outside, our luggage was loaded on a trailer, while we boarded a bus. Within 5 minutes we were in the warehouse that housed our car. On the road quickly and homeward bound!!!
