Unfortunately, there are still cruises being cancelled in 2022 due to Covid-19 and the uncertainty surrounding it.
The pandemic has not ended, and some sailings have been cancelled due to too many Covid-19 cases onboard. The good news is that there are not the mass cancellations we saw in 2020.
The Omicron and BA 2 variant has added a new level of complexity, as the more easily transmittable mutation has caused there to be higher case counts among passengers and crew members.
Cruise lines are still proceeding with scheduled sailings, but several cruise lines have cancelled sailings when necessary.
Here is a list of which ships and sailings have been cancelled in 2022 due to Covid-19.
May 24, 2022
Carnival Cruise Line Protocol Updates
The cruise line has informed booked guests of updated protocols that are in effect on sailings from December 18, 2021, through January 31, 2022. All guests aged two and above will now be requested to wear a mask indoors and outdoors, with exceptions. The cruise line is also no longer allowing any smoking in the casino.
In a letter to guests, Carnival says, Our Have Fun. Be Safe. protocols and procedures have proven very effective during our restart and have been developed in consultation with our medical experts, and they are designed to be adaptable as our current public health situation evolves.
Another significant change is that Carnival now strongly suggests that guests have a booster vaccination before their cruise. Boosters have become an essential defense against the new Omicron variant, as detailed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
The cruise line continued,In preparation for your voyage, we want to update you on the COVID-19 protocols we are implementing fleet-wide for sailings through January 31, 2022, as we respond to the Omicron variant.
Carnival Journeys Cruise Itineraries
Since 2015, Carnival Cruise Line offers the so-called “Carnival Journeys” itineraries. These are longer than usual voyages with length ranging between 9 and 15 nights. Some are one-way .
“Carnival Journeys” offer a more in-depth port of call experiences than the shorter itineraries of 7-8 nights. Among the highlights are live entertainment and exotic culinary experiences that reflect the local cuisine and cultural traditions.
The onboard “journey” experiences feature local cuisine specialties , cooking demonstration, Academy of Fun , traditional dance performances, themed deck parties, crew connections . The new program “Carnival Journeys” features destinations like Hawaii, Caribbean, Mexico, Panama Canal, Europe.
Among the wide variety of offers are over cruises of up to 5 days, providing passengers with many “mini-cruise” options, including new 4- and 5-day deployments for Carnival Valor and Carnival Victory-Radiance . Longer Carnival Journeys visit exotic ports. Bermuda cruises depart from 7 East Coast USA homeports. The unique Panama Canal cruises on Carnival Pride leave from Tampa.

There have been lots of new developments in the cruise industry over the past week as more cruise ships cancel sailings or have itinerary changes, but cruising continues for thousands of guests and the CDCs Conditional Sailing Order moves into a voluntary program.
Carnival Cruise Line Updates Protocols For Sailings Through January 2022
Carnival Cruise Line updates its protocols for sailings through January 31, 2022 including tightened mask policy due to Omicron.
Carnival Cruise Line updated its health and safety protocols on December 17, 2021, and sent notifications to guests detailing some changes due to the Omicron variant. This change comes as two other major cruise lines have also tightened measures to make sure guests and crew remain safe.

Review Of Carnival Cruise Line
CCL-Carnival Cruise Lines is an American passenger shipping company based in Doral, Florida . The company was originally private , founded in 1972 by Ted Arison . The initial public offering of 20% common stock in 1987 provided capital for fleet expansion.
Today, CCL is one of the 10 brands owned by Carnival Corporation – currently the world’s largest passenger shipping company . In 2018, Carnival Corporation controlled ~39% of the global ship cruising market and ~48% of the passengers , with full ownership of 9 brands .

CCL has the largest fleet in the Corporation’s group of companies and accounts for over 1/5 of the Group’s worldwide market share. In 1996, the 101,000-GT Carnival Destiny became the world’s biggest passenger ship and the first to weigh over 100,000 tons.

Carnival China Cruise Brand
In February 2015, Carnival Corporation signed a MoU with China Merchants Group for 2 joint ventures. The MoU outlined an eventual partnership that could result in a new cruise brand , as well as joint development plans for Chinese seaports and destination.
- MoU’s joint venture port plans included the development of transit and turnaround/homeports within China. China Merchants Group is a state-owned company focusing on infrastructure and transportation, also real estate development and financial services. Currently, Carnival Corporation serves the Chinese market through the brands Princess and Costa.
- In October 2015, Carnival Corp signed an agreement with the Chinese companies SWS and China Investment Corp. The USD 3,88 billion deal established the Hong Kong-based joint venture company CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping to place ship orders with SWS. The company plans to build up to 5 new vessels per year for the next 15-20 years. All ships will be China-homeported and with technical support and design plans provided by Fincantieri. SWS builds some of the world’s largest container ships for CSCL.
In February 2017, Carnival Corp and CSSC announced an agreement to build 2 new ships for “CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Ltd”. The deal was officially signed on November 6, 2018.

Carnival Cruise Line Announces Ship Restarts For January And February 2022
Carnival Cruise Line announced plans for more ship restarts for January and February, as it works towards the return of its full fleet sailing from U.S. homeports in the spring of 2022, according to a press release.
With 17 ships scheduled to be operating by year-end, Carnival Sunshine will restart from Charleston on Jan. 13 and Carnival Liberty from Port Canaveral on Feb. 11.
With today’s announcement, Carnival’s U.S.-based operations will cover the following homeports and ships by February, and represents 90 percent of Carnival’s U.S.-based capacity:

Carnival Cruise Line Cancels Cruises Down Under Into January 2022
With no clear plan for the cruise industry in Australia, Carnival Cruise Line has extended its suspension for two ships into January 2022.
Carnival Cruise Line extends its suspensions for cruise operations out of Australia into January 2022. The further cancellations impact guests booked on two vessels. It comes as the government in Australia has not yet allowed cruises to resume safely despite several other cruise markets already reopening for the summer.
Passenger Shipping Pause 2020
Due to the Coronavirus crisis, CCL-Carnival Cruise Line suspended its fleet’s passenger shipping operations by canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures in the period March 13, 2020, through July 2021.
Next are listed CCL-Carnival’s first departure dates by ship/homeport – BREEZE , CELEBRATION , CONQUEST , DREAM , ECSTASY , ELATION , FREEDOM , GLORY , HORIZON , LEGEND , LIBERTY , MAGIC , MARDI GRAS , MIRACLE , PANORAMA , PARADISE , PRIDE , RADIANCE , SPIRIT , SPLENDOR , SUNRISE , SUNSHINE , VALOR , VISTA , JUBILEE .
- The 2020-built Mardi Gras ship’s inaugural sailing was rescheduled from April 24 to May 29, June 5, July 3, Oct 2.
- Carnival Radiance restarted from Long Beach on December 23 .
- Carnival Legend’s Europe 2021 program was canceled and the ship restarted on Nov 14, out of Baltimore to Bermuda.
- Carnival Australia ships were planned to restart in 2022 on April 16 and April 17 , but in February 2022, both programs were canceled and the ships redeployed.
- CCL’s newest boat was scheduled for Nov 6, 2022 .
IMPORTANT: Effective July 31, 2021, all unvaccinated passengers boarding CCL ships in Florida must first buy a travel insurance policy worth at least USD 10,000/ EUR 8450 . Proof of travel insurance is required at check-in. The policy has to be in the name of the traveling passenger and feature US$10,000 and US$30,000 .

Carnival Sunshine Sails From Charleston
Some good news this past week! Carnival Sunshine has finally kicked off sailings from Charleston in South Carolina. The vessel has been operating some cruises from Miami and Fort Lauderdale in December and January to replace Carnival Horizon. That vessel was forced to go into a dry dock due to mechanical issues, which impacted her maximum cruising speed.
Sunshine departed Charleston on January 13 on a 4-night Bahamas cruise sailing to Nassau. Guests will have a day to enjoy at sea after departure and on the way back home.
Carnival Sunshine will sail on her second cruise from Charleston on January 17. This voyage, one of the Carnival Journeys, is a 10-day voyage that will sail to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin islands first, followed by calls to Philipsburg, St. Maarten, St. Johns in Antigua, Roast Town in Tortola, and Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, after which the vessel will make her way back to Charleston during two days at sea.
According to the South Carolina ports authority, guests can rest assured that they will find the cruise terminal fully prepared to deal with the thousands of guests who will pass through during embarkation days.
When a ship is in the port, a team of people will disinfect high-touch areas constantly, including handrails, doorknobs, and other surfaces. Face masks will be mandatory inside the terminal and on board the vessel at all times.
Cruise Lines Extend Cancellation Program
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises have extended the Cruise with Confidence cancellation program. For sailings booked by March 31, 2022, that depart by September 30, 2022, you can cancel up to 48 hours before your sail date and get the full paid value in a future cruise credit.
Guests can use the credit for any sailing that departs within a year of the original sail date, or by December 31, 2022, whichever is longer.

Where Can You Sail
Early in the year, explore the Caribbean and the Californian coast with sailings aboard Carnival Imagination, Carnival Fascination and Carnival Miracle. These offer itineraries which visit the Southern Caribbean, Barbados, the Bahamas, Mexico, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
Alternatively, you could set sail to Australia aboard Carnival Splendor or Carnival Spirit, for a chance to visit ports such as Sydney or Airlie Beach.
Later in the year, new ships Carnival Panorama and Carnival Horizon visit the western and southern Caribbean for 6- to 8-day sailings, visiting the ports of Ocho Rios, Aruba, and Curacao. As the latest ship to join the fleet, Carnival’s Mardi Gras is also cruising in 2022 with itineraries featuring the eastern and western Caribbean ports.
Itinerary Of Carnival Cruise Line
IMPORTANT: In 2022, the CCL fleet leave the ships Carnival Ecstasy and Carnival Sensation .
The announcement was made on February 3, 2022, and triggered the following deployment changes:
- In Jacksonville, Ecstasy was replaced by Carnival Spirit, starting April 23rd. Ecstasy was repositioned to/homeported in Mobile for the period March 5 thru October 10. Carnival Sensation’s Mobile schedule was canceled.
- In Australia, Carnival Splendor’s schedule June 10 thru Sept 26, 2022, Carnival Spirit’s schedule June 5, 2022, thru October 5, 2023, were canceled.
- Carnival Sensation will not restart operations. Ecstasy’s last voyage for CCL departs October 10, 2022, from Mobile.
- Carnival Luminosa starts an inaugural season in Australia in November 2022, based on homeporting in Brisbane Queensland.
IMPORTANT: In 2023 starts the “COSTA by CARNIVAL” cruise program that targets CCL’s North American customers. The program is based on two newbuild Costa ships – Venezia followed by Firenze . Both Costa liners are CCL-managed .

Whats Happening With Cruises In Australia
Frustrations with the Australian government have grown recently as the cruise industry down under remains on hold. Other countries have already reopened, such as the U.S., Europe, and the UK.
Currently, there is no plan from the government to resume cruises from Australia. This comes as the Cruise Lines International Association has not received any response from senior levels of the government.
Earlier in September, CLIA Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz said, Our discussions with government agencies have gone nowhere and our letters to the most senior levels of government have gone unanswered. Other countries have not only created detailed plans to uphold safety on cruise ships in response to the pandemic, but have already resumed cruising in a responsible way.

Kats continued to say, More than a million passengers have sailed successfully in countries where cruising has resumed with strict health protocols in place but in Australia our calls for detailed discussions with health authorities have been ignored.
There has been a four-phased plan with specific vaccination targets announced, but the cruise industry down under does not yet know if it will be a part of those plans.

You can smoke on a Carnival Cruise, though there are some restrictions. Each ship will have designated smoking areas. These typically include specific decks and will be unique to each ship. On board all Carnival cruise ships, smokers are allowed to smoke cigarettes or e-cigarettes at designated slot machines or game tables.
Carnival Cruise Ships Drop Key West
Guests booked on upcoming sailings have received a notification from Carnival Cruise Line on itinerary changes for the Carnival Dream, Carnival Conquest, and Carnival Sunrise. Only select sailings are impacted in January and February that featured a call in Key West, Florida. This comes due to calls to ban large cruise ships and while talks continue between the cruise line and authorities.
The cruise port has now been dropped on sailings for those three vessels, and the notification was only sent out on January 13 to impacted guests, not leaving much time between the first altered departure for Carnival Dream on January 15.
For Carnival Dream out of Galveston in Texas, there are three itinerary changes. The sailings that depart on January 15, 29, and February 12, 2022, will now only be calling at Freeport, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau, all in the Bahamas. Key West was previously scheduled to be the first port of call during those voyages, but that is not the case now.
Four sailings have dropped Key West for the Carnival Conquest based out of Miami in Florida. Departures on January 24, 31, February 7, and February 21, 2022, have all dropped a call to Key West. Those four-day sailings will now only include a visit to Cozumel in Mexico.
Carnival Sunrise has just its February 3 sailing impacted, also based out of Miami, Florida. The three-day voyage will only include a call in Cozumel, Mexico, with Key West being dropped.

Carnival Cruise Line Ships
