Royal Caribbean and Norwegian are the next lines as far as family popularity and options for kids. Disney is considered a favorite for families but it is considered a premium cruise line. This means families can expect to pay almost three times as much for a Disney cruise and they would for Carnival. If youre looking to keep your price tag low, bear in mind the newer the ship the more in demand it will be and the price to sail on it will also be higher. The newer ships offer more ship board amenities and those translate into higher price tags.

So, what we did is break down what a Disney Cruise cost on average for a family of 4 with several different itineraries. These prices are total including all taxes for a family of 4. All of these cruises are prices based on inside, oceanview and verandah cabins.

We did not include the concierge level, because thats on a whole different level. While the inside to verandah cabins are all fairly close in price. After we go over some costs, we will breakdown how to find the best deal.

Now, normally how much a Disney Cruise costs goes up each year, but in 2022 we expect prices to remain the same, except on the new Disney Wish! Plus, be on the lookout for more special offers to get people to return to cruising.

Room Service Convenience Fees

Complimentary room service used to be a standard on cruise ships, but a growing number of lines now charge extra for it.

The worlds biggest cruise line by passenger capacity, Royal Caribbean, for instance, now levies a $7.95 per order service charge for room service even if all you order is a single side of hash browns.

It also and this could really drive you nuts adds an 18% gratuity fee on top of the service charge for good measure. For the record, we find that fee-on-top-of-a-fee structure absurd. Just say youre going to charge us $9.38.

Other lines that have started charging for room service include Norwegian Cruise Line, which now has a $9.95 convenience charge for room service. Celebrity Cruises and Carnival both charge for room service delivered late at night.

The way around these fees is simple: Dont order room service.

On many ships, there is no-extra-charge food available nearly around the clock from multiple outlets just steps away from your room, from casual buffet eateries to grab-and-go pizza stands. All it takes is a short walk from your cabin to get it.

Getting Home And The Unexpected Costs

Our flight home didnt leave until 2 p.m., but the cruise has a you dont have to go home, but you cant stay here policy that kicks in at 9:30 a.m. We had some time to kill.

We also had a layover in Oakland. Those of you familiar with rudimentary U.S. geography know Oakland is in the wrong direction of travel to get to Salt Lake City from Long Beach a fact that also did not go unnoticed by my wife.

While we got breakfast on the ship, lunch time came while we were at the Long Beach airport. We spent $50 on food and drinks there.

When we got to Oakland, we learned that Midwest weather had delayed our planes arrival by another two hours on top of our two-hour layover. That was now four hours in the Oakland airport, and we wouldnt arrive back home until 10:30 p.m. More food and drinks in the airport.

Could we have forgone all that? Sure, but why make an already less than ideal situation worse by being hungry and grumpy? Chalk up another $44.

Once back in SLC, we paid $45 for parking in the economy lot for five days and drove home.
