We Priced A Years Worth Of Cruises To Get A True Cost
With all of these expenses in mind, we dove into what it would cost to live on a cruise ship for an entire year.
Of course, when it comes to cruising for twelve months, you have an amazing number of options. From different cruise lines to routes, departure ports, ships, and even cabin types, there are a number of things that will have a big impact on what you spend.
Thats why we aimed to keep everything simple. To price what it costs to live aboard the ship, we took a look at sailings aboard a single ship from Carnival, which is known for being affordable. In this case, we priced a years worth of sailing for Carnival Horizon in 2023.
Carnival Horizon is a newer ship from the cruise line that sails six and eight-day itineraries year-round from Miami in 2023. That means you could sail the entire year without having to change ships and always coming back to a homeport in the United States.
The routes that the Horizon sails would take you all across the Caribbean, from Cozumel to Aruba, from San Juan to Grand Cayman. Because it is a bigger and newer ship in the Carnival fleet, youd also have tons of amenities and activities on board, as well as a many restaurant options including Guys Burger Joint.
As for the cabin, in our search we opted for a balcony cabin. Yes, you would be able to sail for cheaper in an oceanview or interior cabin, however, we assume that if you are aboard the ship for an extended period of time, having your own balcony is a must.

Meet The Retirees Who Live On Cruise Ships
- Save this for later.
When Jeff Farschman, 72, first retired from his role as vice president at Lockheed Martin Services in 2004, he planned on spending his winters as a snowbird enjoying the warm temperatures of the Caribbean. But that all changed when Hurricane Ivan wreaked havoc on Grand Cayman, his island of choice, in September of that same yearso he made what would become a life-changing pivot. Since hed already booked himself on a week-long cruise to Bermuda, Farschman decided to extend his travels to include six back-to-back cruises culminating as a 47-day trip. This extensive journey became the impetus for how he now spends his retirement: living seven-to-eight months annually aboard Holland America Line cruise ships.
It turns out Farschman is just one of dozens of retired people spending a bulk of their time living at sea. There are plenty of ways to make it happen, from combining stand-alone itineraries to purchasing a unit on a residential cruise ship. People ask, don’t you get bored at sea? says Janice Yetke, 77, a retired travel agent who lives four months a year aboard a ship. I say, are you kidding me? Let me show you a daily program. There’s so much to do if you want to do it.
Around the world cruises are a popular way to spend months at sea.
Can You Afford To Live On A Cruise Ship With Social Security Alone
Is there anything that sounds better than retiring on a cruise ship? You get to see the world, be waited on hand and foot, eat lots of good food, and theres always something to do. There are no dishes to wash, no lawn to mow, and you dont even have to make your bed.
Of course, we all know that those benefits to living on a cruise ship dont come free. In fact, weve run the numbers and even living aboard a modest cruise ship could come to a price of $175,000 for a couple sailing in a balcony cabin for a year.
With the average Social Security benefit being $1,543 in 2020 according to AARP, theres no way you could afford to live on a cruise from just that money alone or is there?
The good thing about cruising is that if youre budget-conscious, there are plenty of ways you can cut costs. From sailing on older ships to staying in interior cabins to shopping for different itineraries and avoiding extras while on board, you can sail for surprisingly cheap.
But is it enough that a Social Security benefit would cover your costs, allowing you to live on the ship full-time if you wanted?

What Is The Maximum Age Limit To Work On A Cruise Ship
Maximum Age for Cruise Employment Although there isn’t a maximum age to work on cruise ships, the unfortunate truth is that cruise lines don’t hire many applicants over the age of 35 years old. That said, there are crewmembers over the age of 35. Many are in management positions after making cruise ship life a career.

Buy A Cruise Residence
Another option for anyone looking for a permanent shipboard residence is to buy a cruise residence. Ships such as The World offer private studios, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments on board.
To call one of these ships home, youll be expected to pay anywhere from $352,000 to $36 million. On top of that, residents are required to pay yearly maintenance fees as part of their budget.
When choosing a cruise residence, you can also look for ships that are built for your purposes. For example, The World is tailored toward retirees while Storyline Cruises are tailored towards digital nomads and working professionals to call home.
You Have The Option Of Wearing A Mask

For any potential sea condo buyers worried about making such an investment during a global health crisis, Ocean Builders offers this advice:

Make Plans To Stay In Touch
Living permanently at sea can present challenges when trying to stay in touch with family and friends. Different times zones and the expense of calling from sea or a foreign port might prevent you from staying current with family and friends. While cruise ships offer Wi-Fi, the ship’s internet connectivity is not always as reliable or as fast as internet speeds on land. Look into cellphone plans and options before you sail away, and budget for expensive ship Wi-Fi .
Those living on a cruise ship can stay connected electronically through social media and email. Also, private companies such as Mail Boxes Etc. or UPS offer mail forwarding services for a fee. Most private mail boxes will hold/forward your mail for up to a year.
Live On A Cruise Ship By Buying Regular Cruises On An Ongoing Basis
This seems the only practical way in which you can live permanently on a cruise ship. But you dont have to spend as much as Mama Lee.
Here are the estimated costs based on double occupancy starting on the cheap:
Basic Cruise Costs $100 per day x 2 people = $6000 per monthThis includes gratuities, all you can eat and port costs.
Independent costs of living for Seniors seems to be about $2000 per month per person = $4000.This includes food.
So for $2000 per month extra a couple can live on a cruise ship forever.
The advantages of this type of living if you have that extra $24,000 per year to spend are these:
-Quality of the meals on a cruise ship is probably a lot better than what you would get in an independent living type of situation.
-You can vary cruise lines, use a Caribbean Cruise Line this month, an Alaska Line next month and a European Line for the next 6 months.
-Shows every night.
-Built-in new friends every week or so. Most cruises end within 7 days and a new crop of potential friends arrives for you to interact with.
-An entire cruise staff to help you with ANYTHING if you have a problem.
So, if you want to live on a Cruise Ship: $24,000 a year extra is all it takes for 2 people.

Understand Your Medical Care Options At Sea
Ships are required to maintain medical staff on call 24/7, including at least one physician and two nurses. Similar in model to assisted living facilities, cruise ships are
to handle most medical emergencies in the short term. Onboard medical facilities will typically include X-ray machines, defibrillators, basic emergency medical equipment and an array of medication. By planning ahead, you can have your medications filled before you board. However, if you fall ill while the ship is at sea, a full-service hospital might be hours or days away — problematic if you need immediate care the limited onboard facility can’t provide. Also, depending on where in the world you’re sailing, medical care in port might not be as good as what you’re used to at home.Morton Jablin, Regent Seven Seas full-time resident, who is also legally blind, has been satisfied with the medical care he’s received while onboard Seven Seas Navigator. “If I need a doctor, there is one in my cabin in five minutes. When I need more specialized care, I visit specialists when in port.”Note that Medicare typically does not cover health care expenses when you’re outside the U.S. or onboard, so investing in a private health insurance plan or a travel insurance plan while cruising is advisable. This will be an extra cost for you to consider.

Example: Sailing For Under $100 Per Day Is Possible
Sailing for less than $100 a day long-term? Its definitely possible, but it does take plenty of discipline. If youre envisioning a lavish, free-spending trip like you might have on a single cruise, then you should adjust those expectations.
Even so, by being smart with your money, including interior cabins, keeping your cruise line options open and being thrifty once on the ship, you can find options to sail for under $100 per person even after taxes, fees, and gratuities.
To give you an example, below weve compiled a schedule of cruises for the start of 2021 that sail from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. These trips add up to more than 60 days at sea to start the year, offering you two months of living aboard the ship.
In our example we purposely added in a number of different ships and cruise lines to offer some variety. We were able to find an itinerary for the entire two months, outside of one night where a passenger would need to spend a night in a hotel in Miami before heading back to sea the next day. Our example also assumes an interior cabin on each sailing.
As you can see, these cruises total up including cruise fare, taxes, fees, and gratuities to nearly $12,000 for two passengers. On average, that comes out to about $94 per person, per day.
In other words, if your dream is to cruise long-term without breaking the budget, this is a good example of how it is possible.
