Disney Universal Get New Theme Park Competition From Sony
“Icon really is about bringing our guests back to what surrounds them when they’re on a cruise, which is the ocean,” senior producer owner Jay Rosser said. “In every way that the guests interact with the ship, there’s always a connectivity back to the water.”
That will likely translate into more areas onboard where passengers can see the ocean .
Royal Caribbean also addressed adding “adrenanline-pumping thrills” to Icon of the Seas. That may be a direct response to rival Carnival Cruise Lines beating it to the punch with Bolt, the first rollercoaster on a cruise ship, on its current flagship Carnival Mardi Gras and the upcoming Carnival Celebration.
“As we started seeing more and more excitement for a lot of our thrilling experiences, we said, How can we take that to the next level? How can we offer something that is really for the bold, for the brave, for the fearless and experience something that they’ve never been able to do anywhere else,” said product owner Emily Rodriguez.
Royal Caribbean has everything from zip lines to water slides and a skydiving simulator on various ships in its fleet.
The cruise line also wants Icon of the Seas to lean into its family-friendly reputation.
“One of the things that stands out to me the most about the insights that we’ve received from our guests is that bonding with family, friends, or whoever you’re traveling with always comes to the top,” said Associate Vice President of Product Development Claudia Diaz-Gonzalez.

But What Exactly Do These Numbers Mean
Active vessels are those that are currently controlled by the cruise line. This does not include future ships that may be ordered or already under construction but have not yet been delivered to the cruise line or entered into service.
Active vessels must also be available to the cruise line for bookings, not leased out or on temporary assignments in other ways, such as being chartered for emergency use.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and global cruise industry shutdown, Carnival Cruise Line featured 27 total ships, but 5 of the Fantasy-class vessels were retired as the line reorganized. As the cruise line restarted, joined the fleet, for the current total of 23 vessels.
Royal Caribbean, in the meantime, still had 26 ships prior to the shutdown, but retired its 2 smallest vessels, while adding 2 of its largest, Odyssey of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas. This kept Royal Caribbeans fleet total at 26 ships and allowed it to surpass Carnival as the largest fleet in the world by total number of ships.
Vessel tonnage is a measure of a ships overall volume and a convenient way to gauge the size of a ship. This does not, however, take into account which spaces on a ship may be taken up by crew quarters or operational areas such as the engine room, laundry facilities, galley, or other behind-the-scenes spaces.

Are The Bigger Ships Better Than The Smaller Ships

Whether you prefer the larger ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet or the smaller ships is all a matter of personal preference. Some people love large ships because there is so much to do on board.
We cruised on Allure of the Seas for seven nights and didnt get time to see or do everything on board. However, others might find the biggest ships a little too over facing, preferring something a little more serene.
The biggest ships tend to be more expensive than the smaller, older ships. This means that in effect, youre paying extra for the facilities that larger ships have. If you plan to spend most of your time relaxing by the pool or exploring ashore, then theres no point paying more for a ship with facilities that you wont use.
Even the small to medium size ships are still pretty big. We cruised on Mariner of the Seas for four nights and were never short of activities on board. For a short sailing like this, the mid-sized ships on the fleet are ideal.

Other Carnival Vs Royal Measurements
While Royal Caribbean is currently dominating the largest and biggest titles in many ways and is closely followed, and even surpassed, by Carnival Cruise Line in different metrics, how do these top two cruise lines compare in other measures?
Cruise line offering the longest cruise? This title also goes to Royal Caribbean, which will sail a 274-night Ultimate World Cruise aboard Serenade of the Seas.
First cruise line to restart its entire fleet after the COVID-19 pandemic? This accolade belongs to Carnival Cruise Line as Carnival Splendor begins her 2022 Alaska season.

Royal Caribbean’s Wonder Of The Seas The World’s Largest Cruise Ship Is Ideal For A Nervous First
I’ve always been a go-big-or-go-home type of person, so taking the maiden voyage on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, in April was an absolute must. Funny thing is, I’d never been a cruise person, despite having never been on one that is, until this Caribbean sailing.
The trip was scheduled for late March 2020, so needless to say, it was put on ice as the COVID-19 pandemic halted the industry. But fast-forward almost exactly two years later, I decided to give it a go again on Royal Caribbean’s new 1,188-foot-long ship.
It turns out, the things I initially thought I disliked about cruising are what I enjoyed most during the seven-day journey that sailed from Fort Lauderdale to Haiti, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.
Perhaps the result of my travel being paused for nearly two years, but coordinating a trip itinerary felt overwhelming. On Wonder of the Seas, however, all of that was taken care of to an extent.
Before embarkation everyone was encouraged to download the Royal Caribbean app, which essentially became my social lifeline. It had everything laid out, from activities to the calendar to a breakdown of the dining room’s rotating menus.
I have a notoriously horrible sense of direction, so navigating not just a ship, but the world’s largest, was challenging on the first day. That said, the spaciousness meant I didn’t have to feel overwhelmed.
When Will Utopia Of The Seas Be Ready To Welcome Passengers
The new addition to Royal Caribbeans fleet of Oasis Class passenger cruise ships which has aptly been named Utopia of the Seas is due to make its first passenger-filled voyage in the spring of 2024.
With the ships construction only just beginning last week it is expected to take around 30 months to complete.

The Wonder Of The Seas Features 18 Decks And 8 Neighborhoods On Board
Weve always prided ourselves on offering guests the best and most innovative ships to give them a truly extraordinary experience. Wonder encompasses all of that, said Tamis.
The Wonder of the Seas was initially meant to make its premiere in 2021 but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The entire cruise industry has been racked with delays and suspensions since the beginning of the pandemic. The CDC has only recently loosened its guidance on cruise ships, having lowered the risk level of cruise trips from Level 4 to Level 3 this past January.
Cruise ships have frequently been sites of super spreader events throughout the pandemic. In December 2021, The CDC tracked a Covid-19 outbreak across 89 different cruise ships.
Cruise lines like Carnival Corporation reinstated guidelines on their ships such as mandatory masking and proof of vaccination, but the highly transmissible Omicron variant bypassed these precautions.
Our health and safety protocols put in place have proven to be effective time and time again over the past year with our sailing s being restarted across each of our brands, said Roger Frizzell, a spokesperson for Carnival, in an email to TIME magazine.
Carnival runs 32 of the 86 cruise ships currently being investigated by the CDC. 25 are operated by Royal Caribbean Cruises, 15 by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and 4 by the Walt Disney Corporations Disney Cruise Line.
An Oasis Of The Seas Evolved With New Venues The Vue The Mason Jar
Wonder of the Seas has evolved, not just within its class, but within Royal Caribbean’s fleet as a whole. The best design features of other ships have been added to the ship, along with several new enhancements.
At the bow on Deck 15, the totally-enclosed Solarium is one of the ship’s signature spaces, with its multi-leveled seating, numerous whirlpools and shallow pools for lounging. Outdoor areas allow for views over the ship’s navigation bridge wings, and at the center of the room is a full-service bar bookended by floor-to-ceiling windows at the Solarium Café and Hooked seafood one deck above.
Having the solarium fully enclosed is a new enhancement aboard Wonder of the Seas, and it’s been welcomed on this cruise, where the apparent wind at sea has reached 50 knots as we sailed south toward Labadee.
Much has been made of The Vue, the new cantilevered watering hole just aft of the Solarium on the port side of Deck 15. This was a whirlpool on other Oasis-class ships but has been turned into a hip panoramic bar aboard Wonder of the Seas.
The bad news: it’s very small and very popular, making finding a seat here an exercise in frustration. Underway, the bar is almost unusable due to high winds and the lack of protection from the elements. On a calm day in port, it’s a great new spot to whet your whistle. At sea — you might want to find another place to quench your thirst.

In fact, its like going to a hotel that just moves magically over night.
We dont set out to build the largest ships, Kulovaara told me, somewhat sheepishly. The goal is to build the best ship. But we have so many ideas that we need a little bit more space.
