Port Provides Update On Why Carnival Cruise Ship Is Pulling Out
Carnival Cruise Line changed the itineraries for 21 cruises onboard its cruise ship . Since then, there has been much speculation on why Carnival did this. The situation becomes much clearer in a statement from the Puerto Rico Port Authority.
According to the local authorities, the changes have been made as a cost-saving exercise. Instead of sailing to San Juan, Carnival has opted for ports nearer to the cruise ships homeport, Port Canaveral, Nassau in the Bahamas.

Is San Juan Too Expensive To Sail To
Given the rising cost of fuel, and in particular, natural gas, the reasoning given by the port director does make sense. According to him, Carnivals management stated that saving fuel and preserving their profit margins are the main reasoning behind the move.
Joel Pizá further stated management had told him would stop sailing 7-day itineraries and replace them with shorter 3-4-day voyages nearer to Port Canaveral. Keeping in mind that there has been no mention or confirmation from Carnival Cruise Line that it would be making a move in that direction.
Carnival Cruise Line made asimilar swap for San Juan calls with Nassau in February of this year this latest change appears to be merely a continuation of that adjustment.
We have had further conversations with Carnival, and we hope that their economic situation improves and that their business model can sustain more voyages with longer itineraries and more stops in Puerto Rico,the official said.
While guests may not like these changes, there is little they can do about it. Cruise lines reserve the right to make changes to their itineraries for any variety of reasons without having to clarify these or give compensation for lost ports.

Carnival Adjusts Itineraries Of Multiple Mardi Gras Departures
Carnival Cruise Line is adjusting itineraries of multiple Eastern Caribbean sailings onboard the Mardi Gras.
Affecting a total of 21 cruises with departure dates between December 2022 and April 2024, the change will see a call to San Juan, Puerto Rico, being replaced with a visit to Nassau, The Bahamas.
According to a statement sent to booked guests, the itinerary alteration is part of a operations plan refining.
Any pre-purchased Carnival shore excursions for San Juan will be automatically refunded to their original form of payment, the company said.
New shore tours for the visit to Nassau will be available online shortly, Carnival added.
After debuting in July 2021, the Mardi Gras continues to offer year-round departures from Port Canaveral.
Sailing from its Central Florida homeport every Saturday, the 5,200-guest vessel offers week-long departures to both Western and Eastern Caribbean.
Visited destinations include Grand Turk, Amber Cove, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán and more.
In 2023, the LNG-powered ship is also set to offer a one-time cruise to the Southern Caribbean. Sailing in August, the eight-night voyage features visits to Aruba and Bonaire, as well as to Grand Turk.
Along with the Mardi Gras, two additional Carnival ships sail from Port Canaveral on a year-round – the Carnival Freedom and the Carnival Liberty.
Before repositioning to Norfolk in May, the Dream-Class cruise ship offers six- and eight-night cruises to Eastern and Southern Caribbean.

What Operational Plans May Mean
While Carnival Cruise Line has not clarified what operational plans are being refined that have resulted in so many itineraries dropping San Juan as port of call, there are several possible options.
It may be that other cruise ships scheduled for San Juan at the time may make the port more crowded than desired to provide the best possible guest experience, or appropriate berths may be unavailable.
It is also possible that other port operations or pier construction in San Juan will be impacting the ability for the Excel-class vessel, the largest in Carnival Cruise Lines fleet, to dock as desired on the affected dates.
It is not unusual for cruise lines to change planned itineraries, even well in advance, as ongoing fleet deployments, dry dock and maintenance schedules, and pier availability may change.
While such changes can be disappointing for guests who were anticipating specific ports of call, providing notice well in advance does permit some time for travelers to adjust their plans or shift their cruises to different itineraries if preferred.
Cruise lines are not obligated to offer compensation, either as refunds, onboard credit, or other bonuses, when ports of call are changed.

Carnival Cruise Director Accepts Promotion Is Leaving Mardi Gras
Carnival Cruise Lines newest ship only got to host Mike Pack for a short time the popular cruise director has accepted a promotion within the company.
In a , Pack revealed the exciting news. I am very proud to announce my promotion to Fleet Cruise Director! I am excited to be working alongside another CD in this new role, we will be travelling around the fleet working with our Cruise Directors!
Packs post also included the new cruise director schedule for through mid-summer. Chris Williams will soon be returning to the Excel-class vessel and be onboard through mid-March. Williams was the cruise director who launched in late July 2021, while Pack took time off to spend time with his wife and newborn baby.
Following Williams, Lee Mason will take over the ship, serving as cruise director through mid-July.

Pack also wrote that two other familiar faces would soon be spotted onboard, saying We have the brilliant Kyndall Madgar and Chris Salazar coming to to experience this amazing ship and how different she is. It is possible you could see them on an XL class ship in the future!
This means there is a good chance that Kyndall and/or Chris will be among the cruise directors on Carnival Cruise Lines next ships, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee.
Carnival Cruise Line has not yet announced who the other cruise director is that will be serving alongside Pack as co-Fleet Cruise Director.

Port Authority Clarifies Mardi Gras Itinerary Changes
Many guests who booked a cruise onboard between the end of December 2022 and April 2024 got a disappointing surprise this week. Carnival Cruise Line announced it had removed San Juan, Puerto Rico, from the itineraries during this period.
While its not uncommon for a cruise line to make changes to an itinerary, removing one port for as many as 21 cruises was certainly unexpected. The cruise line did not give any reason for the changes, saying only the following:
As we continue to refine our operational plans for your cruise, we have replaced our call to San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a visit to Nassau, The Bahamas. Thank you for your understanding. We look forward to welcoming you aboard for a FUN and memorable cruise.
However, the Port Authority has shed some light on the situation. In a written statement released by the authorities in Puerto Rico, Ports Authority Executive Director Joel Pizá said Wednesday that the cruise ship itinerary changes from the Port of San Juan are not due to the recent formalization of a public-private alliance.
