Panama Canal cruises combine this world-famous waterway with great ports in the Caribbean and/or Mexican Riviera. Cruise the Panama Canal and see the massive engineering marvel that was built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Construction on the canal began in 1904 and was completed 10 years and $387 million later. On cruises to the Panama Canal, six immense locks raise the cruise ship from sea level up to 85 feet, then gently lower it –sometimes with only inches to spare on either side. On your Panama Canal cruise, join other passengers on the decks as a canal historian explains the workings of the locks and points out sights along the way.
- The Panama Canal cruise season lasts from September to April.
- Panama Canal cruises are usually 10 to 15 nights .
- Panama Canal cruises are available as round-trip partial transits or one-way complete transits. Partial transits usually sail round-trip from Florida. Ships that cruise the Panama Canal usually go through the first set of locks, then turn around in Gatun Lake and exit the canal the way they entered. Full transits typically sail from coast to coast, beginning in Florida and ending in one of several ports on the West Coast, such as Los Angeles or San Diego .

Norwegian Star Panama Canal Cruise
We went on our first ever cruise with Norwegian Cruise Lines and it was very good. We dealt with Danny from Norwegian and he was very good. We went from Los Angeles to Miami via the Panama Canal. Everything from our arrival on the ship to our room which was a outside balcony the food, entertainment, staff and crew were absolutely fantastic. Now I do have a few things that did bother me and by reading several reviews it bothers a lot of other people. First off all these gratuities that are added on after is just ridiculous. Just make it part of your total price or let us your customers make our own decision to tip for the service and quit upsetting everyone with these added on fees. Second thing we had the Ultimate drink package which you could have all the Grey Goose Vodka, Crown Royal Whiskey, ect, but were charged for a bottle of water or a Gatorade that was unreal. Third thing if you have the meal package on a one week cruise you get 3 meals but on a two week cruise you only get 4 whats up with that. Dont get me wrong this Cruise with Norwegian was a Awesome experience but could have been better with a few adjustments which I mentioned. As a first time cruiser we had reluctantly prepaid these gratuities so we had no charges when we left the ship. Knowing what I know now it really should be my option to tip and how much, not the cruise line.

The Damajagua River is the waterfalls source and the setting couldnt be more beautiful. After hiking through the jungle, you will arrive at a series of cascades that comprise this natural wonder. You will be free to swim in the numerous mountain pools, slide down cascades with slick rock chutes and even jump off some of the waterfalls into the refreshing water below. This area is only accessible on foot, which limits the number of other adventurers. The adrenaline rush will continue once you ease into an ATV and tear off into jungle. You can take the wheel or ride in the passenger seat. Either way, it will be exhilarating, especially if its been raining because the mud will be flying. Although you will be mostly off road, you will stop in a village to interact with the locals.
HIGHLIGHTS
Panama Canal Cruise Terminal
A complete Panama Canal transit is comprised of navigation through 3 locksets. Gatun Locks are on the Caribbean side while Pedro Miguel and Miraflores Locks are on the Pacific side. Vessels transiting the Canal are being raised and lowered 26 m / 85 ft in this 3-lock system. Other special highlights of the Canal are the Culebra Cut and Gatun Lake. Gatun Lake is among the largest man-made lakes in the world covering 422 km2 / 163 mi2. Culebra Cut is 13 km / 8 mi long channel built through solid rock that was the most difficult excavation in the Canal’s construction.
The new Panama Canal locks were officially inaugurated on June 26, 2016, following the completion of a 9-year construction project. Originally scheduled for completion in October 2014, a hundred years after it first opened, the canal’s expansion provided an additional lane of shipping traffic through construction of 2 new locks , this way doubling the capacity of this unique waterway.
During the new locks’ opening, thousands of spectators gathered at Cocolà locks to watch the Chinese container ship “Cosco Shipping Panama” with its 9472 TEU containers becoming the ever first ship passing through the new locks.
During the canal’s opening ceremony, there was a special guest section with around 3000 people, including delegations from different countries, business associates, heads of different authorities and organizations.

Why So Many Changes
Norwegian Cruise Line has not offered any clarification about why Norwegian Joys itinerary has been so dramatically changed, other than citing unforeseen circumstances.
Guests booked on similar Panama Canal transits or Central American visits for Norwegian Joy and other Norwegian Cruise Line ships are reporting similar changes, but no overall explanation.
It is possible that rising crime in the region could be a factor for the port alterations.
On October 4, 2022, the U.S. Department of State Department issued a travel warning for Costa Rica, advising increased caution when traveling to the country due to increased crime. Similarly, the government of Canada likewise issued a travel advisory on October 6 urging a high degree of caution if traveling to the region due to crime.
On October 5, 2022, the U.S. Department of State issued a similar warning for Nicaragua, advising that tourists reconsider travel to the country due to limited healthcare availability and arbitrary enforcement of laws. The government of Canada also encourages a high degree of caution if visiting Nicaragua at this time.
Tourists are often targeted for petty crime such as muggings, pickpocketing, or theft, but more violent crimes including assault and kidnapping are also possible. While such instances are rare, cruise lines prefer to use a cautious approach to ensure their guests and crew members are protected.

- Dry bulk carriers’ tolls are based on DWT .
- Tankers’ tolls are on PC/UMS tons and metric cargo tons.
- Container tolls are based on TEU capacity .
- Cruise vessels’ tolls are based on passenger capacity. They are levied based on PC/UMS or pax berths.
- A new segment was created to toll local tour ships.
Cruise ships through Panamax Canal are charged USD 138 per berth. Cruise ships passing through the Canal’s new locks pay USD 148 per berth. When this decision was made, the new canal locks were 85% complete. The new toll system was implemented on April 1, 2016.
- On May 7, 2008, the boxship MSC Fabienne paid a record highest Panamá Canal transit toll – USD 317,142. Currently, the Canal’s average transit cost is USD 54,000 per vessel.
Due to historic low water levels, in January 2020 the waterway’s transition fees were increased by adding an additional “Freshwater Charge” – fixed at USD 10,000 for vessels with LOA length 125+ ft . Also new is the handling service fee – USD 5,000 and USD 1500 .

About Panama Canal Cruises
Cruise along one of the greatest man-made waterways in the world and pass through the heart of Central Americas wildlife-rich jungles.
The Panama Canal is a triumph of engineering that cuts through Central America, providing a crucial link between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Its easy to understand why most cruise enthusiasts have this stretch of water on their bucket lists. Embark on a Panama Canal cruise from the Caribbean beaches of the east coast to the wild, surf-swelling beauty of the west, traveling through dense, adventure-filled jungles along the way.
The portion of the cruise through the Panama Canal takes about 10 hours, including stops the vessel makes while waiting for the three locks to open. Watch the locks in action as the water levels change to allow ships to pass through, one of the great thrills of Panama Canal cruises.
Select from multiple ships offering journeys along this busy cruising thoroughfare. Choose a major liner complete with entertainment venues and multiple dining options. Alternatively, travel on a smaller vessel for a more personal experience at the canal.
As well as the canal itself, a cruise through Panama Canal offers opportunities to discover more of Central America. Pull into port in Costa Rica for ecotourism excursions and adventurous explorations zip lining through jungle canopies. Your itinerary may include a stop in Honduras or Belize, where you can discover the worlds second-largest barrier reef.
