Plan Activities With The Itinerary In Mind
Having done this cruise twice, I highly recommend having a pre-planned strategy. Doing so will help you see more at your own paceand it can even save you money since shore excursions are pricyespecially if traveling with a family. My suggestions:
Day 2 Kahului, Maui: Since youll overnight here, this is the day to rent a car and explore independently. An Enterprise location is just a 10-minute walk from port and its open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There are also multiple rental car options .
Visit the summit of Haleakala National Park first thing in the morning the 10,023-foot dormant volcano is clearest in the early hours and the views are astounding. Then make your way back down amid the lush volcanic slopes of Upcountry, stopping at AliI Kula Lavender Farm and the paniolo town of Makawao, home to artisan boutiques and the century-old T. Komodo Store, which has a bakery known for its cream puffs.
Next head to historic beachside Paia. If you love seafood, reserve a table at Mamas Fish House for some of the freshest catches imaginableyes, its pricy, but totally worth the splurge.
Day 3 Kahului, Maui: You could keep your car for a second day and explore Mauis other resort area, Wailea, or the lush Io Valley. Or you can use the second day to book an excursion, either one offered by the ship or one booked independently, keeping in mind that all-aboard is 5:30 p.m.

Pride of America
The promise is indeed true: Passengers aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines Pride of Americathe only ship offering seven-night cruises year-round in Hawaiican enjoy nearly 100 hours in port on four different islands. The ship resumed sailing on April 9, 2022, after a two-year COVID-19-imposed hiatus, with guests embarking in Honolulu every Saturday to spend two days each on Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii , overnighting in port on the first two and getting 10 hours each in Hilo and Kona on the third. The schedule allows for plenty of time to explore, whether youre a first-timer or a returnee looking to revisit favorite places.
That said, theres definitely some strategy required to maximize your on-island experience. Having just returned in mid-May from my second Pride of America sailing , Im happy to share advice that can help you enjoy your Hawaii experience.
Norwegian Cruise Line Resumes Sailings With Pride Of America Ship
Norwegian Cruise Lines ship Pride of America returned to service on April 9th, and will resume its inter-island sailings in Hawaii.
Pride of America will return to its year-round, cruises from Honolulu Hawaii that it sailed before the COVID-19 pandemic. The itineraries for Pride of America will consist of seven-day sailings that will make stops in Honolulu, Kahului , Hilo , and Nawiliwili .
However, while the ship will return to its pre-pandemic sailing itineraries, details of the cruises will be different for the time being.
Norwegian Cruise Line said in a press release that during the start-up phase, Pride of America will operate with a reduced guest capacity, around 50% per the port agreement with Honolulu Hawaii. As well as a reduced number of crew members, and a limited amount of dining options onboard. At full capacity, Pride of America can normally accommodate about 2,100 guests.
Some of the dining options impacted are the Modern Churrascaria and the Teppanyaki, which will remain closed for the time being onboard.
Norwegian Cruise Line has not yet announced how long the current restrictions will apply onboard Pride of America.
Passengers will be required to present a COVID-19 vaccine card, or a recent negative COVID-19 test result.
Pride of America is not the first cruise ship to resume sailings in Hawaii since the pandemic, however NCL is the first cruise line to offer Hawaii-based cruises post-pandemic.

Pride Of America Refurbishments 2016
The ships last drydocking was in June 2021, conducted at Vigor Industrial’s shipyard in Portland .
The drydock refurbishments in 2016 and 2018 were done in San Francisco CA, and resulted in the following deckplan changes:
Both drydocks were part of NCL’s “Norwegian Edge” program for fleetwide upgrades . Each drydock costs around USD 35-40 million.

The NCL Pride ship was initially planned as “Project America 1”. Project America was to be a class name as plans included a second 70,000 ton vessel to be built by the USA shipbuilders Litton-Ingalls. This was a US Government lavishly funded program aiming to give USA-based companies experience in building passenger ships and to list the first US-flagged ship in 5 decades. American Classic Voyages Inc bankrupted and NCL bought the unfinished vessel . Its construction was completed in Germany .
NCL changed the ship’s name to “Pride of America”, as well as its dimensions – tonnage and LOA length . Delivery date was scheduled for 2004 but due to a storm damaging the vessel this happened in 2005. The US Government made an exclusive act giving a ship predominantly built in Germany a USA flag. Norwegian’s Pride is the biggest cruise ship in the US register and the only USA-flagged ship home-ported in Honolulu Hawaii.
Pride of America’s class is unique as no other similar ships have been built. Her Inaugural cruise was down the US East Coast and lasted from the 18th of June to the 24th. During the voyage, the vessel was a background for the day time TV show “Live with Regis and Kelly”. Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa awarded their viewers with 1,000 free NCL cruises in a campaign before the show. Starting from the 16th of May they were giving 20 cruises to winners every day until the 10th of June. Thus they filled almost half of the ship’s capacity.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride Of America Returns To Cruising
Norwegian Cruise Line today announced the return to service of Pride of America in Hawaii.
NCLs Pride of America, which is the fifteenth ship in its fleet to return to service, sails weekly seven-day, roundtrip voyages from Honolulu, providing guests nearly 100 hours of port time and the ability to explore four islands in a weeks span, the company said.
The itinerary includes overnights in Maui and Kauai, allowing for more immersive experiences on land, and sights of the Npali Coast. NCL has two remaining ships that will be returning to service, both in early May, which will complete the company’s comeback.
“Being the only cruise line to sail year-round from Hawaii, were thrilled to be back at last,” said Norwegian Cruise Line President and Chief Executive Officer Harry Sommer. “Pride of America will once again offer thoroughly immersive itineraries and deeply authentic experiences that support business and tourism in Hawaii, while providing travelers with everything they seek from a vacation in paradise.”
The Pride of America set sail on April 9, 2022 and is available to book through December 2025. Weekly voyages depart Honolulu every Saturday.

What You Should Know About Norwegian Cruise Lines Pride Of America In 2022
Launched in 2005, Norwegians Pride of America has carried the mantle of the only large U.S.-flagged cruise ship for nearly two decades. It carries it well, perpetually sailing round trip from Honolulu and maintaining status as Norwegian Cruise Lines most profitable ship .
Pride of Americas reentry into service following the disruption of the pandemic was originally slated for January 2022. However, the surge of the omicron variant pushed that date to April. That hasnt slowed demand, as Hawaii continues to attract would-be vacationers with ideal weather year-round and domestic travel status.
Despite the immense challenges of the past two years, Norwegian Cruise Line officially returned its seventeenth and final cruise ship to service on May 9, which reinstates its entire fleet.
So, what should advisors know about Pride of America, the lines only vessel calling on the popular Aloha State, as it once again cruises the Pacific? We offer the following observations after our weeklong voyage.
Our issue is with crew, Sommer admitted. Similar to land-based properties within the United States, we have problems securing enough staff to get this ship up to full. In order not to sacrifice guest service standards, occupancy levels have been reduced commensurate with the number of crew onboard. On our sailing in mid-May, just under 550 crew were onboard as compared with a typical staff of 920 to 940 crew members. In turn, Pride of America is sailing at about 40 percent capacity.
Pride Of America Refurbishment 2013 Review
The list of changes after ships 2013 drydock included:
- The old Lanai Lounge was transformed into 24 new suites. Here were added 24 The Haven luxury suites , including 2 Deluxe Owners Suites and 2 wheelchair accessible suites. The new 24 luxury cruise suites are with butler service, also featuring luxury mattresses, Lavazza coffee makers, Elemis bathroom products, speciality private dining, etc. Also, 4 new Studios were added here with the exclusive Studio Lounge. Another addition on deck 13 is the 4 new Interior rooms.
- Fitness centre equipment was also upgraded
- Interior decor renovations were done in the buffet restaurant Aloha Cafe. New Brazilian Steakhouse restaurant was added . The old Little Italy Italian restaurant was renamed La Cucina.
- The old Lazy J steakhouse was renamed Cagneys.
- All cruise cabins were upgraded with new flat HD TVs.
- The list of other shipwide upgrades includes video-sound-light systems, new carpeting , Wi-Fi internet access , and also to the digital signage system.
- The 2013 ship refurbishment project cost NCL over USD 30 million.

Know What Youre Getting
First, a bit about Pride of America. The ship, which carries 2,186 passengers at full occupancy but is sailing at 50 percent capacity through at least November 2022, is 17 years old and unique to the NCL fleet. It features a distinctly Americana themethe main reception area resembles something straight out of Jeffersonian Washington, D.C.with décor thats kitschy and colorful rather than contemporary and neutral.
There are bubblegum hues in Pinks Champagne Bar, for instance, and a riot of vivid bead-inspired colors in the Mardi Gras Cabaret Lounge & Nightclub. There are two pools, multiple hot tubs and lots of appealing outside deck spaceincluding the Aloha Lanai Bar aft on deck 11ideal for sail-away cocktails at sunset.
Entertainment onboard is more low-key than on other NCL ships, which are known for their Broadway musicals and high-gloss production shows. Aboard Pride of America, performances are limited to vocalists, comedians, movie screenings, and game-show-like contests.
Cabins are on the snug side, especially bathrooms, but NCL did an extensive soft goods renovation during the COVID-19 hiatus, so cabins, hallways, and some public spaces feel refreshed.
