Hi-looking for feedback on this ship and the itinerary. We are staying in cabin L101-anyone have any experience with this cabin? Any ship secrets? Longest cruise I’ve been on is 7 days, so 15 will be brand new to me. Anything you suggest we absolutely must do or see? Stops are honolulu, hilo, maui and kauai. I appreciate any suggestions you may have!

Grand Princess becomes the first cruise ship to return to Hawaii with guests by making a call at Honolulu on January 9, 2022.

Grand Princess became the first cruise ship to dock with guests in Hawaii since the start of the pandemic two years ago. The vessel arrived on Sunday, January 9, and docked at pier 2 in Honolulu. Despite some concerns about Omicron and how the vessel would fare on such a long trip, the locals warmly welcomed Grand Princess.

The Princess cruise ship departed from Los Angeles on January 4 and will spend several days exploring the archipelagos islands and coastline. Grand Princess is the first of several vessels slated to return to Hawaii in the upcoming weeks and months.

You can visit Hawaii without a passport on a closed-loop sailing . Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America and UnCruise’s Safari Explorer, both U.S.-flagged vessels, are the only cruise ships based in Hawaii. Other lines and ships offer there-and-back Hawaii itineraries from ports like San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

First Cruise Ship To Hawaii In 2 Years Arrives With Positive Covid

The first cruise ship to Hawaii in two years arrived with multiple COVID-19 cases in isolation. A state official said those who tested positive have not left the ship.

Grand Princess, which departed from Los Angeles on Jan. 4, arrived in Honolulu on Sunday, Jan. 9.

Speaking to The Conversation, state Department of Transportation spokesperson Jai Cunningham said the cruise line has reported multiple positive COVID-19 cases although declined to give numbers on passengers or staff.

“The important thing is the people that were quarantined did not come onto Oahu and until they test negative, will not be allowed in the state,” Cunningham said. “So very much like the planes, there’s this process in place to try and keep anyone who is infected with COVID, not walking around amongst us, if you will.”

The ship has a capacity of about 3,000 but is traveling with a reduced capacity due to the virus. There are 1,188 passengers and just under 1,000 crew members.

Under the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions color-coded system for cruise ships, Grand Princess has a yellow status. That means the reported cases of COVID-19 have met the threshold for CDC investigation.

The criteria for “yellow” status includes cases reported in 0.10% or more of passengers, or one or more cases among the crew.

Grand Princess also required passengers to show a negative COVID-19 test taken within two days of embarkation in Los Angeles.

We have got about half a full ship. Everything is going well. I think everyone is healthy. We have all been swabbed. So, I think people living here dont have to be concerned about us bringing the disease over here, said Joann Monroe from Los Angeles.

Grand Princess departed from Honolulu late in the evening of January 9 and set sail to Kauai, Hilo, and her final stop in Maui before crossing to Mexicos Baja California peninsula for a stop in Ensenada. The cruise will end again on January 19, when Grand Princess returns to Los Angeles.

Covid Cases On Hawaii

According to the SFDPH, there were 143 COVID-19 cases for the April 11 trip and 37 for the April 23 trip aboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship.

In a statement sent to KHON2, the SFDPH said the following:

The vaccination rate for the Ruby Princess April 11 trip was 100% for both crew and guests. For the trip that docked in San Francisco on April 23, the vaccination rate was 100% for the crew and 99% for guests. The vast majority of individuals who tested positive for COVID experienced mild or no symptoms. Only one person on the April 11 trip was hospitalized, which speaks to the incredible efficacy of vaccination.

San Francisco Department of Public Health

SFDPH said cruise operations in San Francisco resumed safely in strict compliance with all applicable CDC rules and regulations. SFDPH, the Port of San Francisco and individual cruise lines partnered to develop memoranda of agreement for all vessels calling in San Francisco.

Included in the MOU are specific requirements in San Francisco that 95% of the crew and passengers disembarking in the City are fully vaccinated in order to decrease the risk of severe illness among cruise passengers arriving into the City, SFDPH told KHON2. San Francisco has coordinated with other California port jurisdictions to require that 95% of crew and passengers be fully vaccinated.
