Viking River Cruises And Prague

As we already mentioned, we took the Viking River Cruise Prague extension. It was two days in Prague prior to our Grand European Tour . We booked everything through Viking, so they chose the hotel, which was the beautiful Corinthia Hotel. Since the hotel was quite a ways outside of the city center, Viking provided a complimentary shuttle that ran every thirty minutes from about 8am until 7-8pm. Prior to arriving at our hotel, Viking also picked us up from the airport. Everything was smooth!

On our first full day in Prague we had an eight-hour tour of the city. We saw all of the major sights like the Old Town Square, Charles Bridge and the Astronomical Clock. We also had a chance to explore on our own and experience the culture of Prague. This tour was included with our Viking River Cruise extension.

That night we took an optional tour, which was a folklore dinner in the Czech countryside. We drove about 1-1.5 hours outside of Prague to this beautiful little house. We ate authentic Czech food and enjoyed a great performance of music and dancing. It was one of our favorite parts of the entire trip.

On the second full day, we spent the first half of the day exploring on our own. We took this chance to visit the Hard Rock Café and enjoy some Czech burgers. Just kidding they were just normal burgers.

From Prague To Berlin: Drama And Contrast On A Viking River Cruise

Cruise Out Of Barcelona: Viking River Cruise Berlin To Prague

My latest Viking River cruise took place on the Elbe, a somewhat lesser known European river, that flows 678 miles through the Czech Republic, Germany and the North Sea. On this cruise, we saw central European destinations that had a historic brilliance as well as a profound darkness, powerful metaphors of the complex history of central Europe before and after World War II.

Prague is your first port of call, it lies on the Vlatava river, a tributary of the Elbe. Vlatava is also called the Moldau, and for those who know classical music, this river was the inspiration for Smetanas symphonic poem of the same name. The Moldau flows under Pragues famous Charles Bridge, the countrys oldest, which was built between 1357 and 1402. The bridge is built of sandstone blocks, flanked at each end by fortified towers that the Old Town with Lesser Town.

The bridge is also decorated with 30 Baroque statues of Saints, created in the 17th century and beyond. The most famous is the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, Confessor to the Queen. The story is, he would not disclose her confessions to the suspicious King, who finally had St. John thrown into the river, where he drowned. This was King Wenceslas IV, not the same one who was immortalized in the popular Christmas Carol.

Best Time For Elbe River Cruises

The Elbe can suffer from low water levels, especially in June and July. Riverboat operators adjust if a stretch of river is running either too high or too low . Sometimes passengers are bussed to destinations along the river or transferred to boats in a different riverside location.

It’s important to understand that fluctuating water levels are part and parcel of river cruising and beyond the control of operators. Be prepared — quite literally — to “go with the flow.”

With year-round Elbe cruises available from 2016, you’ll be able to enjoy the river in its many moods and seasons. If you need warmth, it’s best visit between May and September when temperatures are in the 70s. But rain is also more likely and heavy tourist traffic is a certainty, so pre-and post-cruise hotel stays will cost peak-season prices.

Temperatures fall substantially from October to December, but so do tourist numbers . Average temperatures in October can be in the mid-50s and fall to the 30s and below as the year draws to a close. January and February are often freezing. While temps rise again in March and April, you should still take layers of warm clothing.

Key events include the Duckstein Festival Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival in September and Christmastime, of course, when Hamburg, Prague and other cities along the river host magical markets.
